What does an ADHD Coach do to help parents with ADHD challenges?
ADHD Coaching provides a supportive and non-judgmental space whereby parents gain a deeper understanding of how ADHD manifests in the dynamics of their family life -- especially how and why ADHD affects their child's (and their own) behavior and performance. Rather than continuing to struggle, feeling stressed, depressed, and hopeless, coaching helps parents embrace their child's unique talents to develop strategies that can positively manage the obstacles ADHD presents in their personal situation.
How is Coaching different from Therapy?
Coaching is not designed to address psychological issues. While emotional issues may arise, the primary focus of coaching is to help you identify your goals, achieve them and develop constructive habits and skills. With coaching, there is little emphasis placed on the past. Instead, the focus is on creating what you want now and in the future and how to get you there. Coaching holds you accountable to remain focused on your goals and values, adjusting the way you approach obstacles in order to achieve the outcome you envision. Similar to therapy, all coaching sessions are held in the strictest confidence.
What about medication for treating ADHD?
Electing to use medication to alleviate ADHD symptoms is a personal choice, to be considered after consulting with an MD experienced in treating ADHD. Results vary widely by individual. Many adults and children have experienced improved "executive functioning" by taking prescribed stimulant medication (i.e. Ritalin, Concerta, Adderall, etc.); though research suggests that coaching with an experienced ADHD coach can afford significant benefits alone or in combination with medication. Since many individuals who have ADHD are also challenged by other conditions (i.e. dyslexia, depression, bi-polar disorder, etc.), it becomes important to have a complete diagnostic profile of the individual prior to prescribing medication in order to optimize results and minimize adverse side-effects.
Why do I need a Coach, can't I just do it myself?
Often people don't realize what stands in the way of achieving what they want. A coach offers an unbiased and objective perspective, helping you recognize your patterns and habits, and is a catalyst to help move you above and beyond your own personal limitations. With coaching, you reach your most ambitious goals faster and more effectively than you can alone.
How does the Coaching Process work?
My intent is to help you get where you want to go as as quickly as possible. The first step is to call or email me for a complimentary phone consultation to learn more about me and answer any additional questions you may have about the way coaching works.
Coaching sessions are typically 45 minutes, by phone or in-person, on a weekly basis. However, coaching is customized to meet your needs, so you can choose 60 minute sessions if you want more time, or 30 minutes if you want less.
During the first coaching session, we discuss how ADHD challenges play out in your life and begin formulating a plan for achieving the goals that will make the greatest impact on your life. Between coaching sessions, you can email, text or phone me if you need advice, have a problem or want to share a success. These brief interim "check-ins" help support you and keep you on track.
The more consistently we work together, the sooner you'll see results. To experience the greatest effectiveness, I suggest clients make an initial 3-month commitment. As goals are achieved, we might move on to new goals, plan for the longer term or you might decide to stop coaching. Coaching centers on your needs, so those decisions are driven by you.
