Common Questions about Coaching

Why do I need a Coach, can't I just do it myself?
Often people don't realize what stands in the way of achieving what they want. A coach offers an unbiased and objective perspective, helping you recognize your patterns and habits, and is a catalyst to help move you above and beyond your own personal limitations. With coaching, you reach your most ambitious goals faster and more effectively than you can alone.

What does an ADHD Coach do to help adults with ADHD challenges?
ADHD Coaching provides a positive, supportive and non-judgmental space where you gain a deeper understanding of how ADHD manifests in the dynamics of your life. Rather than focusing on 'what you can't do' we shift the perspective to 'what you CAN do.'  Rather than continuing to struggle, feeling stressed, depressed, and misunderstood, coaching helps you develop personalized, practical strategies to positively manage the obstacles you face.

How is Coaching different from Therapy?
The focus of coaching is on creating what you want and how to get you there. Coaching is not designed to address psychological issues. While emotional issues may arise, coaching holds you accountable to remain focused on your goals and values, adjusting the way you approach obstacles in order to achieve the outcome you envision. Similar to therapy, all coaching sessions are held in the strictest confidence.

What about medication for treating ADHD?
Electing to use medication to alleviate ADHD symptoms is a personal choice, to be considered after consulting with an MD experienced in treating ADHD. Results vary widely by individual. Research suggests that coaching with an experienced ADHD coach can afford significant benefits alone or in combination with medication. Since many individuals who have ADHD are also challenged by other conditions (i.e. dyslexia, depression, bi-polar disorder, etc.), it becomes important to have a complete diagnostic profile of the individual prior to prescribing medication to optimize results and minimize adverse side-effects.

How does the Coaching Process work?
My intent is to help you get where you want to go as quickly as possible. The first step is to call or email me for a complimentary phone consultation to learn more about me and answer any additional questions you may have about the way coaching works.

Coaching sessions are customized to meet your needs. During the first session, we get to know one another. We'll discuss how ADHD challenges play out in your life and begin formulating a plan for achieving your goals. Between coaching sessions, you can email, text or phone me if you need advice, have a problem or want to share a success. These brief interim "check-ins" help support you and keep you on track.

The more consistently we work together, the sooner you'll see results. To experience the greatest effectiveness, I suggest clients make an initial 3-month commitment. As goals are achieved, we might move on to new goals, plan for the longer term or you might decide to stop coaching. Coaching centers on your needs, so those decisions are driven by you.
